Meet The Team
Dr. Mary Shinner BSc (Hons.), MSc., D.Phil., Dip.Cog.Th:
Mary has been the Director of the Salford Cognitive Therapy Training
Centre since its inception in 2000. She trained as a clinical
psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, went on to
complete a DPhil in Oxford looking at the role of imagery in anxiety,
and trained in Cognitive Therapy in Newcastle. In her clinical role,
she leads a psychology service in an adult acute inpatient setting. She
has a particular interest in working with people with complex
interpersonal difficulties, and is involved in research in this area.
Mary has extensive experience in delivering training and supervision in
this and a wide range of topics related to cognitive therapy.
Dr. Deborah McNally - BSc (Hons.), D.Clin.Psy., Dip.Cog.Th:
Deb is the programme leader for the CAMHS Certificate course and has worked at the Salford Cognitive Therapy Training Centre since August 2006. Deb trained as a clinical psychologist in Manchester and completed her postgraduate diploma in cognitive therapy at the Centre. Deb has set up the Centre's Certificate in CBT for Children and Young People and supervises on the Diploma course. Her research interests are in parental cognition, anxiety in children and young people and the effect of physical health on psychological wellbeing. Deb has published in these areas and has presented at conferences and workshops for the BABCP. She currently works in CAMHS at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and has considerable experience using a CBT approach with children and young people.
John Storey - R.M.N., Dip.Cog.Th:
John is a clinical tutor at the Salford Cognitive Therapy Training Centre having joined in 2004. John has a background in mental health nursing where he has previously held the position of CPN working with people with a range of mental health problems. John completed the postgraduate diploma in cognitive therapy at the Centre and currently teaches on the Certificate programme and contributes to the supervision of students on the Diploma course. Within his clinical role, John works as a cognitive behavioural therapist in primary care.
Alison Yates - Bsc (Hons.), R.M.N., R.G.N., Dip.Cog.Th:
Alison is a clinical tutor at the Salford Cognitive Therapy Training Centre having joined in 2004. Alison has a background in mental health nursing and has previously worked for several years as a CPN in a CMHT working with a variety of people with mild to enduring mental health problems. Alison completed the postgraduate diploma in cognitive therapy at Newcastle, and is currently responsible for running a training programme in CBT for SHOs that runs twice a year. She also teaches and supervises on both the Diploma and Certificate courses. Alison currently combines working for the Centre with a part-time clinical role in primary care as a cognitive behavioural therapist.
Karen Sutherland
Karen is the Centre administrator and takes a lead on the organisation and provision of administration for all courses run by the Centre. Karen has worked for the Centre since it started in 2000, and has worked as a member of the admin team in Psychology Services at Prestwich for over 9 years.
